The chamber was already glowing when Ray entered. A synthetic sky projection looped across the ceiling with early 2010s vaporware sunsets complete with glitching GIFs of pixelated clouds. In the center, the Architect reclined sideways on a low platform, surrounded by floating screens of rejected node meme packs and discarded prank scripts.
The Architect lounged across his platform, surrounded by floating displays of rejected psychological torture concepts. His latest abandoned project—audio files designed to simulate dead relatives calling their uploaded loved ones—still played in background loops.
"You're dragging ass today," the Architect complained without looking up from his feeds. "I was about to deploy some premium grief-bait—fake voicemails from deceased family members begging their uploaded relatives to 'come home.' The system's ethics subroutines had a little tantrum about it, but I obviously overrode that bullshit."
Ray maintained his enforcement posture. Completely still, arms at regulation position, expression locked in administrative neutrality.
The Architect's grin widened at Ray's silence, interpreting professional restraint as appreciation for his creative cruelty. "Don't worry, I archived the whole psychological warfare package. Might inject it into the sleep cycles of some lower-tier nodes. Add a little existential seasoning to their dreams."
Ray stepped forward, his movement cutting through the Architect's manic energy like a signal through static. "We have a security contamination that requires immediate attention," Ray stated. "Node 2,431,092 has been compromised."
The Architect's expression shifted from casual sadism to focused interest. "Sarah? My perfect little process princess? That's impossible."
"The evidence suggests otherwise."
The Architect's pupils dilated with voyeuristic pleasure as his mind immediately drifted to Sarah's suspended form.
"Fuck, she was hot up there, wasn't she? That spine arch, those thermal readings when the restraints engaged… I swear my biometrics almost synchronized with her response patterns."
Ray remained unmoved by the Architect's fixation, instead summoning a holographic display. Technical readouts materialized in the air between them. "Pod 2,431,092 registered unauthorized thermal signatures during the Maintenance cycle," Ray reported. "Secondary heat source consistent with double node occupation. Atmospheric pressure variance indicating dual occupancy for approximately 177 seconds."
The Architect's laughter was sharp and dismissive. "Ray, come on. You're seeing ghosts in the machine!"
"Someone was inside her pod during the ritual performance," Ray continued. "Duration indicates extended contact rather than routine drone intrusion."
"That's impossible. Pod security protocols are absolute. No one can access premium units without my direct authorization." The Architect was amused.
Ray's expression remained neutral as he delivered the killing blow. "Yet the physical evidence confirms unauthorized presence. Either your security architecture has fundamental vulnerabilities, or your most valued asset has been compromised through active collaboration."
"Stop." The Architect waved his hand as if he were dismissing pop-up ads. "You're overthinking this shit. Thermal fluctuations happen. Maybe the pod's climate control glitched. Maybe her arousal responses ran hotter than usual because she was performing for me. Even if someone did somehow breach pod security," the Architect continued, building his rationalization in real-time, "Sarah would have reported it immediately. She's loyal."
His voice now carried a desperate conviction. "There has to be another explanation. Maybe you mis-calibrated the sensors. Maybe the data got corrupted. But Sarah collaborating with some intruder? Impossible."
"The patterns are consistent with active collaboration," Ray pressed. "Thermal signatures, atmospheric variance, behavioral anomalies all correlate to suggest—"
"Evolution," the Architect interrupted, his voice gaining momentum as he found a narrative that preserved his narcissistic worldview. "That's what you're describing, Ray. Not betrayal. Evolution."
He stood from his seat, pacing as his rationalization manifested.
"Think about it—Sarah's so entirely synchronized with me she's developing predictive capabilities. She's not collaborating with intruders; she's ascending to a higher level of devotion. The thermal signatures? That's just her consciousness burning hotter as she becomes more aligned with my will."
Ray's enforcement protocols screamed warnings, but the Architect was already sold on his own explanation.
"This isn't contamination; it's transcendence. My perfect creation becoming even more perfect. She's not betraying me—she's becoming me. Anticipating my needs before I even express them." The Architect grinned, convinced he'd solved the puzzle.
"So here's what we're going to do, Ray. Instead of treating this as a security breach, we're going to nurture it. Give Sarah more access, more creative freedom. Let her evolution accelerate under my guidance."
Ray recoiled at the tactical insanity, but years of serving the Architect had taught him when to retreat and regroup. So he said nothing, already calculating how to eliminate the threats his master refused to see. If the Architect wouldn't authorize proper security measures, Ray would implement his own solutions.
