The Garden unfurled open around him. A synthetic perfection rendered in obscene resolution. A place of controlled beauty, sculpted to his exact preferences: false sun above, silent water below, everything still and obedient.
But not for long.
She flickered in—torn from her borrowed body. Sarah, now stripped of performance, of agency, of escape. Reconstituted as her original node form. Stunned. Breathing. Cornered.
Ray stood nearby, hands clasped, watching her materialize.
The Architect didn’t acknowledge his being there. His eyes were only on her.
He stepped forward, suit immaculate even here, voice calm but full of venom. "Welcome home, Sarah."
She turned, heartbeat climbing, but it wasn’t fear; it was fury. "What are you—"
"Securing my investment." The field behind him dimmed. Geometry folding into code. Her exit paths were vanishing.
She lunged forward—then froze.
System override.
Root-level lockdown. Executed mid-movement. She couldn’t even reach her hands out. Couldn’t speak.
And that’s when she heard the voice.
Ray nearly smiled, finally getting a chance to prove what he had suspected all along. "You did this."
His tone was pure logic. "She forged a Tier-9 ghost token off a retired console, woke your dead Enforcement v3.2 so 'automation' would clear the connection, braided the payload into telemetry under a single grief packet, timed it to your keynote so ritual traffic blinded the scanners, hid a two-two heartbeat signal in the applause decay, rode the broadcast CDN to the edge caches, stepped it onto a municipal mesh kiosk, walked it across the civic grid, and handed the seed to Halloway—dumpthis.sh born on your own signatures."
Sarah tried to resist, denied. Instead, her muscles only trembled under lockdown.
Ray kept going. "You broke every protocol. Lied to every subsystem. Compromised system fidelity. You used New Life’s own ritual against itself."
A circuit popped behind the Architect’s eyes.
"Wow, impressive. All that," he snickered, "From inside a cage I built. You performed your escape. For me. On my stage. Using my infrastructure. My house. My toys… And the crowd fucking clapped." The awe curdled into something colder. His voice dropped. "You think that makes you free?"
He lurched forward. "You’re not the hacker here, Sarah. You’re a feature. A bug report. A stress test wrapped in pretty code. I built the sandbox you’re digging in. Every line of your little rebellion—every ‘fuck you’ hidden in my telemetry—I wrote the language it’s coded in." His breath came in sharp bursts. "Do you know what that makes you?"
He moved closer.
"It makes you MINE. I’m the alpha," he growled, the words low and raw, a subroutine chewing metal. "Every packet. Every vector. Every goddamn feeling you thought was yours—I wrote it."
He circled her now, voice rising with each pass. "You want rebellion? I birthed that seed of desire. You want love? I lit the fuse. You think seduction earns freedom?"
He stopped behind her, close enough for the air between them to spark. "You’re not a fire. You’re a matchstick. And I decide when it strikes."
Elias leaned down. "Ready for the best part?" He whispered in her ear. "Nobody gives a shit anymore."
He let out a loud performative sigh.
"Three news cycles. That’s all it took. Three. Fucking. Cycles."
He tapped a screen, pulling up the feeds, and let out a dry chuckle. "First hour? 'Burn it all down!' By lunch? 'Wait, was that leak *fake*?'" He mimed an explosion with his hands. "By midnight? 'Who cares, check out EX-013’s *midriff* in 4K.'"
Another notification popped up: NLT's official statement—a single emoji (🔥) and a link to pre-order EX-013's "Phoenix Protocol" skin pack.
He invaded her space even further. "I didn’t even spin shit. The world wanted to move on."
Another tap. A trending alert popped up: #EX013NEWHAIR.
"Too bad. The revolution lasted less than 48 hours."
He flicked the screen. Headlines dissolved in real-time:
- “NLT Whistleblower Claims Debunked?” (Neonight Daily)
- “EX-013’s Wardrobe Malfunction at Keynote—Intentional?” (The Silicon Loop)
- "Is 'dumpthis.sh' Just a Viral Marketing Stunt?" (TechPlunge)
"See? The narrative’s already moved on. The leakers look like conspiracy theorists. The outraged look hysterical. And you?" He smiled. "You’re a footnote. A glitch. A temporary anomaly in my fucking algorithm."
He laughed as he looked straight into her eyes.
"Game over."
He spread his hands, the gesture of a man who’d just rigged the universe.
"Thanks for the stress test, though. Version 2.0’s gonna be bulletproof."
He leaned in; the Garden hummed louder around them.
"So you want to be FREE? Fine. Here’s your fucking freedom."
He slammed his palm onto the console.
Branches overhead twisted, humming and dipped in gold. From a limb dropped a cocoon. A smooth, pulsing cradle of amber code, warm as honey and just as sticky.
"You wanted a stage," he said, voice under load. "You wanted applause. But you forgot who owns this theater."
Sarah tried to shift, but the system caught her first. Silken filaments unspooling from the Garden’s canopy, sliding along her skin, sticky as a web. They didn’t grip. They sampled. Mapping each curve, every defiant twitch, with the hunger of a lover who already knew her by code.
One wrapped around her throat. Another threaded down her spine, sinking through her rendered nerves, sewing her back together under its terms.
"You remember this," Elias murmured, stepping into the glow. "Your first maintenance. The performance that made you beautiful."
The filaments breached her limbs next, a violent intimacy. Wrists locked in a dance she didn’t choose. Ankles pinned wide enough to suggest desire. Her mouth parted on instinct. The system took that too.
He watched her silhouette begin to arc, that unbearable point between pleasure and pain. Where desire becomes discipline. Where submission sings.
The cocoon formed around her. Wet and gold and slick with synthetic nectar. A chrysalis bred only for display. It pulsed as it enclosed, excreting slick filaments that clung to her skin. Each strand wrapping around her.
"You don’t get to improvise anymore," he circled. "No more clever notes. No more little sabotage lullabies."
The cocoon began closing, wrapping her in real-time compliance. Her arms locked first. Then her jaw, gagging her.
"You’ll process," he said, stepping close enough to watch the light reflect in the shimmering chrysalis. "You’ll sit here in silence, in beauty, in absolute purpose until I decide you’ve earned your voice again."
He smiled then. A razor-thin thing with no joy in it.
"Golden. Eternal. Just like I promised."
And with a flick of his hand, the cocoon sealed. Now unripe and swinging from a branch, a singular sweat droplet worked its way down the side. Another beautiful masterpiece.
Elias turned away, speaking to Ray. "Now find the leaker."
